Optional payroll deductions

Reduces federal income tax; state treatment varies. Does not reduce Social Security or Medicare. Use payroll retirement contributions, not Roth or IRA deposits.

Subtracts from take-home only. Pre-tax cafeteria-plan premiums and their tax effects are not modeled.

Optional W-4 withholding settings

Copy known settings from your current W-4. Blank steps use zero. These settings change payroll withholding; they do not change your annual tax filing status or final tax liability.

Optional A4 state withholding settings

Copy known settings from your Alabama employee withholding exemption certificate. Use the entries on your actual certificate and payroll records. Employer rounding can differ.

Only the local tax you select is included. Federal and state withholding use default settings until you enter your own.

Withholding assumptions and exclusions

Alabama annual wage income tax models income-stepped standard deductions, personal exemptions and federal tax liability deductibility. Dependent exemptions and itemized/special deductions are not included. Configured local occupational tax requires an explicit locality. Regular employer payroll separately uses its sourced withholding rules. US paycheck estimates include federal income tax, FICA, statewide income tax where applicable, modeled employee-paid state payroll taxes, and configured local income taxes when an explicit locality is selected. They do not model itemized deductions, dependent or non-standard credits, nonresident-alien, supplemental-wage, or state withholding certificate adjustments outside supported payroll methods, unconfigured local taxes, employer-specific benefits, garnishments, or multi-employer wage-base coordination. No local income tax is included. Modeled choices: Birmingham. Unclassified pre-tax deductions reduce income-tax estimates but remain FICA-taxable. Only explicitly identified qualifying Section 125 health premiums reduce FICA wages; retirement contributions remain FICA-taxable. State payroll uses the published state withholding tables. No A4 is known; exemption code zero and no dependents are assumed. Federal payroll uses the 2020-or-later W-4 with the selected filing status and Steps 2–4 blank unless confirmed elections are supplied. Annual previews use approximate pay dates unless a specific pay period date is supplied; canonical forecast occurrences use their verified dates. Expired exemptions switch to the disclosed default after the renewal deadline. Regular gross pay and each payroll deduction are rounded to cents before calculating take-home pay. The sum of rounded paychecks can differ slightly from the entered annual salary.

Sources and assumptions

US payroll withholding estimates use IRS guidance, Social Security wage bases, and published state tax rules. Standard deduction assumptions, modeled localities, employee payroll taxes, and optional modern W-4 settings are included. State withholding remains an estimate unless supported certificate settings are entered. Multi-state/nonresident situations and unentered benefits can change actual pay.

Common questions

Which countries are supported?
Canada and the United States. Canadian estimates include federal and provincial or territorial tax, pension, and employment insurance rules. US estimates include federal and state income tax, Social Security, Medicare, and modeled employee payroll taxes. Choose the country where you live and work.
Is this exact payroll withholding?
No. It is a planning estimate. US W-4 elections, tax credits, local taxes, multi-state work, employer benefits, and deductions can change actual pay. Canadian employer deductions and payroll setup can also change take-home pay.
Can I include retirement contributions?
For Canada, optional personal RRSP and FHSA contributions estimate tax-filing savings without changing modeled payroll withholding. For the United States, pre-tax payroll retirement contributions reduce modeled income tax but do not reduce Social Security or Medicare.
Are my entered amounts saved?
No account is required, and entered financial amounts are not stored.
